Movies & Joss Whedon | Our Favorite Things: The Jessica Edition
There are a lot of enjoyable things in life. And we like to partake in many of them. We thought it would be fun, though, to compile a list of the things that we are really loving right now, the things that are top of the list, that get us going every time. So for this, the inaugural week of our blog, every day is going to see a post from each of us on one or two of our favorite things. So, without further ado, Jessica’s favorite things, part one.
everything Joss Whedon
Chances are that you’ve heard of a little movie called The Avengers. Yah, you’ve heard of that one? You’ve probably also heard of its director, Joss Whedon. But before this behemoth of a movie, Joss was a little less well known to the general masses and a little bit more of a cult phenomenon and all around god to the nerds.
Joss is responsible for some of the absolute best television to ever grace our screens. Bryan and I, we are both big fans of good television. We spend hours every week watching our favorite shows. But if the name Joss Whedon is attached to said show, chances are that I have seen it multiple times, and that I’m a wee bit emotionally attached.
When I was nine years old, my best friend at the time and I discovered these VHS tapes at the video store. We took them home, and were immediately pulled into the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I have been hooked ever since. We spent hours playing on her front lawn, well after dark, pretending we were slayers, too. I have seen the series form beginning to end six or seven times, not to mention the countless times that I have watched single episodes (or, let’s be serious, five or six episodes at a time). I watch Buffy when I’m mad, nervous, upset, anxious, happy, excited. It’s just damn good TV, the kind that has great plots, smart and witty dialogue, and characters that you fall deeply in love with. I always wished I could be one of the Scooby Gang.
Joss Whedon has that effect. He knows exactly what makes viewers tick, and he knows exactly what makes his characters tick. It is difficult to explain his genius. Instead, I encourage you to go out and experience it for yourself. Check out Buffy, Buffy’s darker older brother of a spin-off, Angel, the criminally short Firefly (starring Comic Con darling and Edmonton native Nathan Fillion), Dollhouse (also absurdly short), and the web series Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. I believe that each of these is available for viewing on Netflix. Then come back and tell me how right I am. And if you don’t agree…we may not be able to be friends anymore.
(Joss Whedon also co-wrote The Cabin in the Woods, which is a phenomenal horror movie. For real.)
For other incredible TV, see: Veronica Mars, Game of Thrones, Community, Dexter, Scrubs, Bones, Gilmore Girls, and the first three seasons of How I Met Your Mother. I’m also going to go out on a limb and recommend Friday Night Lights, even though I’ve never watched it. I own the seasons and plan on watching it as soon as I get the opportunity!!
This one seems sort of…obvious, at first. Most people like movies, right? But Bryan and I love movies. We are saving up for a big trip next year, but one of the things that was a priority to us was having money to spend on going to the movies. Our dates often consist of heading to the movie theatre for one of the many films that we have anxiously been anticipating. I love sitting in the big comfy chairs at the theatre with the arm rest between our seats pushed up so we can sit closer. I love previews, because I can add the movies that look awesome to our ever growing list of movies to enjoy (if you have a suggestion, shoot it our way, we love adding things to the list!). I used to love getting Milk Duds but then Cineplex stopped selling them. Boo. Probably better for my waist line, but it was sad to see that part of the movie going experience end. However, it is still one of my favorite ways to spend time together.
Some of the movies that we have seen recently are The Avengers (twice, and planning on a third time soon), Wanderlust, Cabin in the Woods, and The Hunger Games.
Movies we are looking forward to this summer include Snow White and the Huntsman, Rock of Ages, Prometheus, The Dark Knight Rises, and Savages.
PS. I’d also like to add that I have the biggest crush on Tom Hiddleston. AND Loki. I realize that might be odd. But it’s oh so true. LOOK AT THIS PICTURE. My Tom Hiddleston/Loki crush + adorable child = mega amounts of swoon.
